Some two decades after the fall of communism there is a dramatically changed geopolitical landscape in all postcommunist states:
new states
- repositioned borders
- changed status of ethnic groups from minorities to majorities
- post-conflict zones
- complicated constitutional arrangements and citizenship laws
- new language laws
- changing fortunes of ethnic parties
- rise of nationalist parties
- removal of borders and trans-border cooperation
- internationalisation of minority rights.
The aim of this continued project is to explore contemporary identity politics in post-communist Europe and re-assess the methodologies with which we study ethnicity – not only in Eastern and Central Europe, but everywhere where the post-communist experience of rapidly changing domestic and international politics can be utilized.
