Dr. Weikai WANG is a Lecturer in Planning in the Department of Geography and Planning. Prior to joining University of Liverpool, he worked as a Research Fellow on an ERC Advanced Grant project in the Bartlett School of Planning at University College London (2022- 2024) and as a Postdoctoral Research Associate on a NERC-Newton funded research project in School of Geographical and Earth Sciences at University of Glasgow (2020-2022).
Weikai has undergone interdisciplinary academic training in Human Geography, Urban Studies and Economics from BSc through to PhD level. He obtained his MSc and BSc degrees at Peking University, China. He completed his doctoral research in Urban Studies at University of Glasgow. Weikai has diverse experience in academia, industry and government in the UK and China. Outside academia, he worked as a planning consultant for two years (2014-2016) and participated in over ten government planning projects for multi-scalar Chinese governments.
Based on interdisciplinary academic training and diverse working experiences, he investigates urban and regional development from a multidisciplinary perspective, combining the insights from geography, planning and environmental science. His current research mainly focuses on urban and regional governance, spatial planning, and environmental governance, with a special focus on China. He has published widely in English and Chinese leading journals around these topics. He is keen to develop international comparative research and collaborations on themes of city regional planning and governance, the evolution of spatial planning system, and their relationship with environmental governance.
