New research centre to reduce plastic in construction to launch
Published on
A new research centre that aims to reduce plastic in the construction process will be launched later this month within the School of Environmental Sciences.
The Changing Streams Research Centre has been created in partnership with Changing Streams CIC, a not-for-profit company established in 2019 to tackle plastic pollution in industry.
Changing Streams CIC works in partnership with the University through Dr Gareth Abrahams and Professor Jonathan Sharples from the School of Environmental Sciences alongside industry partners.
The Changing Streams Research Centre will establish a network of industrial stakeholders from the construction industry willing to commit to reducing plastic in the design, development and construction process.
Dr Gareth Abrahams, who will lead the new Changing Stream Research Centre, said: “The Changing Streams Research Centre is the result of a strong relationship between academia and industry which is fundamental if we are to develop innovative and practical solutions to environmental damage and climate change.
“It is an exciting and innovative approach that aims to bring together expertise from across the University with partners and industrial collaborators to look at reducing the use of plastic in the construction sector.”
Professor Doug Mair, Dean of the School of Environmental Sciences, added: “We are very excited to announce the new Research Centre in the School of Environmental Sciences. It makes a valuable contribution to the School’s extensive expertise in climate change and environmental pollution. By engaging directly with industry and developing novel solutions that can have an immediate and demonstrable impact in practice, the research undertaken by this centre will be at the forefront of environmental issues and our responses to it.’
