Student Profile

Emilia Hilton

Why did you choose to study English Literature at the University of Liverpool?

I chose to study English at Liverpool because of the warmth I felt from the lecturers on the open day, it reassured me that I wouldn’t just feel like just a number on a course and instead get to share my passion and interest for the subject.

What do you enjoy most about the course, and why?

I really enjoy the breadth of modules on the course, it really encouraged me to choose Liverpool and I have been able to explore my passions from the Renaissance all the way up to the Gothic and Children’s Literature. If there isn’t coverage of something you’re interested in the dissertation module in the third year is a great way to explore your own research interests.

Can you tell us about an exciting project you have completed on your course?

My most exciting project has to be the creative coursework piece for my ‘Children’s Literature’ module in which I created a museum exhibit poster discussing Mice in Children’s Literature. It was so much fun and will be joining the Special Collection’s new exhibit.

What does Liverpool have to offer as a city?

Liverpool offers something for everyone, from nightlife, museums, and culture to green spaces. It also has such great transport systems that if you wanted to go out of the city for the day that is just at your fingertips.

Can you tell us about the teaching methods/how your learning has been facilitated?

One of the things that drew me to Liverpool was their small group teaching, tutorials that run alongside lectures or seminars often only consist of around 6-8 people allowing intimate discussion. This really helped me to feel less nervous when sharing my ideas and creates a real community feel.

What extra-or co-curricular activities do you take part in, and how do these affect your student experience?

Whilst at university I have partaken in a large number of extracurricular activities, I am the current secretary of the English Society, and I have been part of the URS with Dr. Sophie Oliver and a student ambassador for my course. All have been greatly enjoyable building my confidence in my own abilities but also making me feel like a bigger community at the university as I make connections with other students and staff.

What are your ambitions for the future and how will your experiences at the University of Liverpool help you in your future career?

In the future, I would love to go into research or academia and all my extracurricular activities and experiences during the course have really aided my confidence in my own abilities making me feel more inspired to aim high.

If you could go back, what advice would you have given yourself before going to University?

Believe in yourself, because other people do.
