Our courses chart how literature and language have developed over time, from the middle ages to the present.

You can study a single honours programme in English, specialising in literature, language, or a balance of the two; or you can combine any of the three pathways with another subject through the University's Combined Degrees scheme. 

Brian Nellist English Attainment Scholarship

The Brian Nellist English Attainment Scholarship is awarded annually to the two Year 1 students with the best performance in Single Honours or Major (75%) English programmes, and continuing at Single Honours or Major level for Years 2 and 3. Learn more about the Brian Nellist English Attainment Scholarship

You can study English, English Language and English Literature on a Joint Honours (50/50) basis with a broad range of other subjects – from Business to Sociology – or take one of our Major/Minor (75/25) combinations incorporating one of seven languages. See the full range of Combined Degrees

Our specialist areas

You can combine the study of specific periods and genres such Medieval Literature or American Poetry with thematic modules such as Science Fiction, Women's Writing, Postcolonialism or The Gothic. You can combine your study of literature with language topics such as sociolinguistics, discourse analysis, psycholinguistics, pragmatics. Or you can take creative writing and theatre modules which will enable you to develop your own creative and critical practice.

Through our internationally recognised research we are constantly evolving our curriculum. Our programmes cover literary and linguistic approaches to topics ranging from courtly love to climate change. So, whatever your options you can be confident your programme will be alive to contemporary debates within English studies and the changing world in which we live.
