You can study a single honours programme in English, specialising in literature, language, or a balance of the two; or you can combine any of the three pathways with another subject through the University's Combined Degrees scheme.

The Brian Nellist English Attainment Scholarship is awarded annually to the two Year 1 students with the best performance in Single Honours or Major (75%) English programmes, and continuing at Single Honours or Major level for Years 2 and 3. You can combine the study of specific periods and genres such Medieval Literature or American Poetry with thematic modules such as Science Fiction, Women's Writing, Postcolonialism or The Gothic. You can combine your study of literature with language topics such as sociolinguistics, discourse analysis, psycholinguistics, pragmatics. Or you can take creative writing and theatre modules which will enable you to develop your own creative and critical practice.
