What course are you currently studying?
I am currently studying the MA in Applied Linguistics and TESOL at the University of Liverpool. In the first semester, I chose to study four modules: Methods of English Language Teaching (MELT), Lexis and Vocabulary Teaching, Second Language Acquisition (SLA), and Teaching English to Young Learners (TEYL).
Among the modules offered, Methods of English Language Teaching is one of my favorites, as it provides me with the opportunity to focus on understanding and staying updated with various teaching methodologies. Additionally, the course Lexis and Vocabulary Teaching has deepened my understanding of the crucial role that lexis and vocabulary play in modern language learning and teaching. This knowledge has significantly enhanced my ability to design and implement effective teaching activities that help learners practice and retain new vocabulary.
Apart from these, I also greatly enjoy studying Second Language Acquisition and Teaching English to Young Learners. The SLA course provides a comprehensive understanding of how individuals acquire a second language, examining both cognitive and sociocultural perspectives. It has strengthened my awareness of the factors influencing language learning, such as learner’s motivation, age, and context. Meanwhile, Teaching English to Young Learners has equipped me with the skills to design interactive activities and foster a supportive environment where young learners can develop their language skills effectively and confidently.
Why did you choose to study at the University of Liverpool?
First of all, I want to say that the longer I stay here, the more I realise how right my decision to come here is!
I ultimately chose the University of Liverpool not just because it is a coastal city with stunning scenery and unique architectural styles, but also because of its globally renowned reputation for academic excellence in research and teaching. The campus perfectly blends history with modernity, and the most iconic example is the Gothic-style Victoria Building, known as the “Red Brick Building”. Before coming to Liverpool, I was amazed by this building when I saw it in photos and videos—it’s such a beautiful structure! I’ve always loved red brick walls, and seeing an entire building like this was truly breathtaking. Now that I’m here, walking past it on my way to classes feels like being surrounded by art, and it brings me so much joy every day.
Additionally, I was fortunate to attend a University of Liverpool alumni event, themed “We are Liverpool,” in Beijing before coming here. This gave me the opportunity to meet one of the lecturers in Applied Linguistics and TESOL who also teaches my modules now, as well as several alumni who shared enthusiastic reviews and offered a lot of encouragement to me. I must highlight the lecturer’s warm and inclusive approach—he gathered everyone in a circle, making us feel instantly connected. Although it was our first time meeting, the conversations were so engaging and inspiring that it felt like we had known each other for much longer. The vibrant event and welcoming atmosphere that evening solidified my decision to choose the University of Liverpool among all the offers I had received.
What’s the best thing about studying your programme?
The best thing about studying the MA in Applied Linguistics and TESOL is its practicality and comprehensiveness. The programme is thoughtfully designed to provide both theoretical knowledge and practical skills. For example, the Methods of English Language Teaching module offers an in-depth exploration of various teaching methodologies, while the Lexis and Vocabulary Teaching and Second Language Acquisition modules allow me to delve into the core aspects of language learning.
Moreover, I’ve had the opportunity to apply what I’ve learned to real-world scenarios, such as leading a teaching session. In addition, there will be an optional module in the second semester that further enhances practical learning. These experiences have been incredibly rewarding. The supportive lecturers and the collaborative learning environment with my classmates also make the journey even more enriching. Their guidance and encouragement inspire me to continuously grow and improve as an educator.
How do the facilities and/or staff help you with your studies?
The University of Liverpool provides excellent facilities and supportive staff that have greatly enhanced my learning experience. The modern and well-equipped library is a standout resource, offering not only an extensive collection of academic materials but also access to the KnowHow programme. This programme provides workshops, tutorials, and online resources that have helped me develop essential academic skills, such as critical thinking and essay writing.
Additionally, my lecturers are incredibly patient and approachable. They explain complex concepts clearly and are always willing to provide guidance during and after classes, creating a supportive learning environment. The combination of these facilities and dedicated staff has made my studies more productive and enjoyable, allowing me to focus on achieving my academic goals.
Did you access any of the support services available to you? If so, how did you find the service?
I am aware that the University offers a wide range of support services, although I haven’t accessed any of them yet. However, I plan to join the KnowHow webinars about writing to help me prepare for my upcoming assignments. I have also heard great things about the University’s counselling services and career planning support, which are highly praised by students. I feel confident that as I continue my study here, these services will provide me with valuable assistance and guidance, giving me the courage to face any challenges without feeling overwhelmed.
What has been your highlight of your time at Liverpool so far?
The highlight of my time at Liverpool so far has been taking on the role of session leader during the Week 7 class in the Methods of English Language Teaching (MELT) course. For the first 30 minutes of that session, I was responsible for leading the lesson, which provided me with a valuable opportunity to demonstrate my teaching skills while developing my abilities in lesson planning, content preparation, and delivery. It was both a challenging and rewarding experience to successfully conduct my first full teaching session entirely in English. I am incredibly grateful for my lecturer’s guidance and support during the preparation process, as well as the encouragement and collaboration of my amazing classmates.
How do you believe undertaking postgraduate study will help your career prospects?
Undertaking postgraduate study has been a significant step in advancing my career prospects. I have always had a strong passion for English, and becoming an English teacher gave me the opportunity to meet and teach a diverse range of students. I am committed to helping my students avoid unnecessary detours in their English learning journey and acquire knowledge more efficiently. To achieve this, I have consistently explored and implemented various teaching methods. However, during my teaching experience, I encountered certain challenges and bottlenecks. Since I had not received formal teacher training before, I deeply value the opportunity to study at the University of Liverpool, which has provided me with the knowledge and skills needed to address these challenges effectively.
The programme I have chosen has been incredibly beneficial to me, not only in terms of the course content but also in the practical teaching skills it equips me with. It has helped me clarify many aspects of teaching, such as understanding individual differences among students, which was something I previously struggled with. Moreover, I believe the completion of this one-year programme will also enhance my academic qualifications, which will be valuable for my career development. I am confident that this postgraduate study will provide me with a solid foundation for future professional growth and open up new opportunities in the field of English language teaching.
What advice would you give to anybody considering postgraduate study at Liverpool?
So far, my experience studying at the University of Liverpool has been fantastic, and I would highly recommend it to anyone considering postgraduate study here. The environment and climate are wonderful, although the wind can sometimes be quite strong, so I would advise bringing windproof and waterproof clothing. Other than that, I believe adjusting to life here will not be a problem.
The scenery is absolutely beautiful, and the city centre offers convenient shopping options. The coastline is also a lot of fun, and most places are within walking distance, which makes getting around really easy. What has stood out to me the most, however, is the kindness of the people here. I have received help from so many strangers, which has been truly heart warming. The supportive and welcoming atmosphere in Liverpool makes it an ideal place to live and study. Just come when you have a chance, you won’t regret it!
