Why did you choose to study at the University of Liverpool?
Studying at the University of Liverpool was quite a straightforward decision for me personally, because I had already done my undergraduate studies here. The University’s academic quality and student life was a major factor in continuing my studies, particularly in a city which I’ve grown to love and feel a special attachment to.
What’s the best thing about studying your programme?
The range of writers! There’s a great amount of different poets, playwrights and novelists that you get the chance to research about and read their works. There’s such a wide range of modules, so you can be studying different literary periods and movements, such as the Gothic, Shakespeare and Romanticism. The staff are incredibly knowledgeable, and always happy to help you with whatever concerns or ideas you have.
How do the facilities and/or staff help you with your studies?
The facilities provided to students are amazing, and were another big part of choosing to continue studying here. The Sydney Jones library and the English Department building in Abercromby Square are in great locations, and easily connected to Liverpool’s town centre, and the rest of campus. The English staff are always happy to help and always friendly, and you can always contact them for any advice or questions.
Did you access any of the support services available to you? If so, how did you find the service?
The only support services I used was for when I required help with late penalties and extenuating circumstances with my coursework. The university is very understanding, and are always available to help with whatever problem you have. It’s a very human process, and it’s always helpful when the person helping you is friendly and understanding. There’s a vast range of support services, like the finance team that have helped me with problems I had with student loans, which were easily and quickly sorted.
What has been your highlight of your time at Liverpool so far?
Everything! The academic study has been worth the work and effort, but the student life is what makes postgraduate study and Liverpool special. You get the chance to meet so many people from different backgrounds, and I’ve been lucky to make plenty of friends, who made moving away from home so much easier. Liverpool is a special place, with so much live music and things to do.
How do you believe undertaking postgraduate study will help your career prospects?
I took the English Literature MA to further my field of research within the early modern period, as I wanted to start specialising in the literary period that I found most interesting. I’m hopefully going to take the skills I’ve learnt from the MA to look into jobs within the editing and publishing field, although I’ve considered a PhD to continue my studies.
What advice would you give to anybody considering postgraduate study at Liverpool?
Take the risk and do it! Postgraduate study at Liverpool is a worthwhile and rewarding journey, and you won’t regret it. I’ve made so many memories since being in Liverpool, and I couldn’t imagine studying at another university. It can be challenging work, and at times you can feel the pressure, but everything works out for the better, and you’re always surrounded by people happy to help you if you study here.
