Why did you choose to study at the University of Liverpool?
I gained a BA in French and Linguistics many years ago before moving to a career in the IT industry. Having retired, I was looking for an MA course in language and linguistics which was within commuting distance from where I live. The MA at Liverpool appealed to me particularly because it allows me to focus on my interest in stylistics and the language of nineteenth-century literature.
What’s the best thing about studying your programme?
For me, it has been the chance to get back into the world of linguistics after a long break, and to choose research/essay subjects which are related to my interest in the language of literature.
How do the facilities and/or staff help you with your studies?
There are students with a wide range of research interests on the course, and the teaching staff encourage us to seek supervision from members of the English department who have expertise in our individual specialisms. The staff have made time for discussion on plans for forthcoming essays and have responded quickly to any emails requesting information or clarification on the course work.
How do you believe undertaking postgraduate study will help your career prospects?
I am not looking for a career although I would like to publish some writing in future and I am sure that the feedback provided by the staff on my written work will help with that objective.
What advice would you give to anybody considering postgraduate study at Liverpool?
My advice would be that University of Liverpool is a welcoming and friendly place where students from a wide diversity of backgrounds and nationalities come to study. Liverpool itself is a thriving waterside city with a rich cultural background.
