Ellie Rose, Worcester

PhD Student

Why did you choose to study at the University of Liverpool?

Having done both my undergraduate and my master’s degrees at this university, I was already incredibly attached to the city and had begun building positive academic relationships with my department. This hugely influenced my decision to remain here for my PhD as I think the city has so much to offer in terms of culture, events and entertainment, but is also not too overwhelming to move to. My positive experiences at the university also influenced my decision, as I knew I would be based in a department populated by knowledgeable lecturers and that would offer opportunities for me to develop my professional and research portfolios.

What’s the best thing about studying for a PhD?

It gives me the opportunity to explore a topic that I feel very passionate about in depth and the space to develop my research ideas, with access to great resources and incredibly supportive supervisors.

How do the facilities and/or staff help you with your studies?

As a PhD candidate, I work very closely with my two supervisors who continually offer me amazing encouragement and guidance. They encourage and celebrate my successes, provide support when I’m struggling and challenge me to continue growing as a researcher. Additionally, the university offers a comprehensive collection of databases, literature and secondary resources that are so helpful for reinforcing my research.

What has been your highlight of your time at Liverpool so far?

Being awarded the School of the Arts Doctoral award. After putting a lot of time and thought into my application and feeling as passionate about my work as I do, it was really exciting and encouraging to achieve this and to know that the university has faith in my project.

How do you believe undertaking postgraduate study will help your career prospects?

As someone who is aiming to pursue a career in research, I know that completing my postgraduate studies is helping to set me on this path, helping me to develop the necessary skills and build the network required to be successful.

What advice would you give to anybody considering postgraduate study at Liverpool?

I know as much as anyone how intimidating the idea of postgraduate studies can be, but it is so incredibly worthwhile if you are passionate about the subject and fully immerse yourself in your departments. My biggest piece of advice if you are considering becoming a postgraduate is to get involved – go to the events, reach out to your lecturers and supervisors with questions, join societies. Doing these things will make the experience even better and really helps with the transition from undergraduate.
