Hypothesis and The Metaperspective in Contemporary [Man] Booker Prize-winning Fiction

Naomi Adam

Research

Naomi’s thesis takes a combined Text World Theory/possible worlds theory approach to the stylistic analysis of contemporary (i.e. post-2000) winners of the [Man] Booker Prize for Fiction. The thesis focuses upon hypothetical perspectives and scenarios within these works, in particular zeroing in upon the notion of the metaperspective (in essence, a hypothetical outlook as to how one is perceived by others) and its recurrence throughout these narratives. It suggests that these metaperspectives may take a variety of guises: narratorial, communal, racial, or literalised.

Teaching

Naomi teaches on undergraduate modules in stylistics (ENGL.105: Introduction to Stylistics) and sociolinguistics (ENGL.106: Attitudes to English) within the Department of English.
