Digital Heritage 2018 Conference

In October 2018 Dr Nick Webb of the Liverpool School of Architecture attended the 3rd International Digital Heritage Congress and Exposition in San Francisco to present on-going findings from the cross-departmental AHRC funded research project investigating the design and construction of English medieval vaults. The team were keen to reach an international audience focussing on digital heritage and to gain feedback on their research to date and as such, they presented their investigations to date into the vault design of the Lady Chapel at Ely Cathedral, as well as outlining the digital methodology that enables them to reverse engineer the medieval design process.

Whilst at the conference they saw several intriguing and inspiring presentations, such as investigations using Heritage Building Information Modelling, immersive virtual reality, as well as mobile and static laser scanning and photogrammetry techniques to name but a few. It was an opportunity to meet colleagues in the digital heritage field internationally and to see demonstrations of the latest technological hardware and software advances as part of the exposition. It was also an excellent opportunity to discover the city of San Francisco and gain inspiration for design studio back at Liverpool. Particular highlights were buildings by renowned architects such as Frank Lloyd Wright, Mario Botta, Herzog and de Meuron and Snøhetta.
