About

Dr. Fabio Bohns is a materials engineer specialising in mechanics of biomaterials such as bone and dental resins. He earned his BEng in Materials Engineering from the Federal University of Pelotas (Brazil) in 2016, including a year of study abroad at the University of Liverpool (UK). His studies continued with an MSc in Dental Materials at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (Brazil), where he developed materials to mask white spot lesions (2018). Then, he completed a dual PhD in Engineering through a collaborative program between National Tsing Hua University (Taiwan, 2019–2021) and the University of Liverpool (UK, 2021–2023); during his PhD, Fabio used animal models to characterise the mechanical properties of bone diseases such as osteoporosis and osteogenesis imperfecta.
In 2024, he joined Prof Maulik Patel's group as a Postdoctoral Research Assistant for a short period, when he worked in developing strategies to analyse the mechanical properties of glasses used for nuclear waste immobilisation.
In 2025, Fabio joined the University of Liverpool as a fixed term Lecturer in Biomaterials and Biomedical Engineering.
Fabio has interest in understanding the biomechanical behaviour of diseased mineralised tissues.

Outside academia, Fabio is the team leader of the Residential Advisors in Melville Grove and Tudor Close halls of accommodation at the University of Liverpool.
