Liverpool maintains strong world ranking
University of Liverpool has been ranked in the top 150 universities in the world by the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), published by Shanghai Jiaotong University.
The University is ranked in the 101 to 150 group overall, and in the 10 to 14 group in the UK, alongside LSE, Sheffield and Birmingham.
The annual publication ranks universities by six indicators, including alumni and staff winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals, highly-cited researchers, articles published in Nature and Science, articles indexed in major citation indices, and the per capita academic performance of an institution.
More than 1,000 higher education institutions worldwide are measured, with the top 500 published. 37 UK institutions have made the Top 500 this year, one down from last year with Swansea dropping out.
Harvard has topped the rankings for the 11th year in a row, with Cambridge coming top of the UK rankings, and being placed 5th overall.
The top 200 institutions are also listed across five broad subject areas – Science, Engineering, Life Sciences, Medicine and Social Sciences – and across five subject fields – Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Computer Sciences and Economics/Business.
Chemistry at Liverpool has entered the ranking as a new entry this year in the 151-200 group, alongside Science. Medicine is ranked in the 76-100 group and physics in the 101-150 group.
