Liverpool’s Top Guns win Royal Aeronautical Society AeroChallenge 2013!
The Royal Aeronautical Society (RAeS) national AeroChallenge 2013 was won with ‘flying colours’ by the University of Liverpool’s Aerospace Engineers.
The winning team of four, Tim Milne, Mark Smith, Michael Lovering and Jamie Pattison, had their aerospace knowledge thoroughly tested in the ‘University Challenge’ style quiz.
Competing against teams from other universities and aerospace companies including Rolls Royce, Cobham and universities of Bath, Manchester and Glasgow, the teams were challenged on topics including; Principles of Flight, Aerospace History, Aerospace on Film and TV, About the RAeS, Current Affairs / Business, Weapon Systems, Aircraft Recognition, Airlines, Air Transport and Operations, Military Aircraft and Rocketry.
The team progressed easily through the quiz heats to face Perth Aircraft Engineers (UHI) in the final. The final was an exciting contest but the Liverpool team’s knowledge of aircraft identification and expertise in the principles of flight helped them to win the final with an impressive final score of 30 points to Perth’s five and win the prestigious RAeS AeroChallenge Trophy.
Tim Milne, 4th Year MEng Aerospace Engineering with Pilot Studies, said “We are passionate about aviation and are delighted to have won the trophy. We achieved 3rd place in the past, but we were determined to win this year.
“Being involved in the competition is intense but great fun as well as being superb for networking with other universities and companies.”
Dr Mark Johnson, Aerospace Engineering Programme Director in the School of Engineering said “Our Liverpool Aerospace Engineers beat 15 teams nationally to win the AeroChallenge 2013. This is a great achievement and a well-deserved victory for our student team. We are incredibly proud of them and the level of dedication, commitment and knowledge they showed in winning this competition.”
