Engineer shortlisted for PraxisAuril Knowledge Exchange Award

Professor Kate Black from the University‘s School of Engineering has been shortlisted as a finalist for the PraxisAuril Knowledge Exchange 2022 Academic Entrepreneur Award.
Kate Black, Professor of Additive Manufacturing, focuses on the development of novel functional materials using binder jet printing for the manufacture of metals and ceramics.
In 2019, she co-founded the University spin-out Meta Additive Limited to commercialise a novel chemical approach to 3D printing that is capable of manipulating materials at a molecular level. Meta Additive, was acquired in 2021 by Desktop Metal, Inc., a leader in mass production and turnkey additive manufacturing solutions.
Professor Black works collaboratively with industry and translates her research work to solve important challenges, including helping to design and supply World Health Organisation approved personal protective equipment to local NHS staff during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Professor Black’s nomination was supported by the Research Partnership and Innovation (RPI) Directorate and RPI’s IP Commercialisation team worked closely with Professor Black to provide support around patent filing and upskilling in entrepreneurship, business and commercialisation strategy development.
The University is a member of PraxisAuril, the professional association for Knowledge Exchange practitioners. Their global network provides support and training to universities, private and public sector research organisations. The PraxisAuril Knowledge Exchange Awards recognise the people and partnerships that underpin knowledge exchange activities, celebrating outstanding performance, and the winners will be announced on the 29th November.
