Promoting career opportunities for women in STEM Subjects
The School of Engineering has been awarded Athena Swan Silver Award in Dec 2021 and through its new Silver Action plan we continue to address challenges associated with staff in engineering.
The Athena initiative is supported at the highest levels of the Faculty, with the developments and actions led by senior staff and designed for female members of staff in relation to transparency of information for career progression, appraisal, equal opportunities, networking, mentoring and work-life balance.
The Athena SWAN principles also play a significant part in the Faculty’s contribution to ‘Achieving Institutional Excellence’ (AEI), which is intended to engage staff at all levels in innovating and improving the way the institution functions.
Athena Swan Principles:
- helps institutions achieve their gender equality objectives
- assists institutions to meet equality legislation requirements, as well as the requirements and expectations of some funders and research councils
- uses a targeted self-assessment framework to support applicants identify areas for positive action as well as recognise and share good practice
- supports the promotion of inclusive working practices that can increase the retention of valued academics and professional and support staff, demonstrating an institution’s commitment to an equitable working environment
