What is Aerospace Engineering

Aerospace Engineers design, analyse, build, test and maintain vehicles, their sub-assemblies and components as well as their associated systems that fly. Flight can mean both within and outside the Earth’s atmosphere. They have a wide variety of skills and competences that enable them to work in diverse projects across the Aerospace and many other industries. These include being numerate, being articulate when communicating ideas and being able to deal with complex problems that require may compromise to meet competing requirements.

As an Aerospace Engineering graduate, you will be well placed to take up opportunities in project-based, research and management roles, both within the Aerospace sector as well as other engineering industries and beyond. You may also choose to go onto to further Postgraduate study.

What is the difference between BEng and MEng degrees?

The MEng is a four-year integrated Master’s degree developed to fast-track our graduates to become Chartered Engineers either with the Institution of Mechanical Engineers or the Royal Aeronautical Society.

Chartered Engineers (CEng) are the leaders of industry and develop solutions to engineering problems using new or existing technologies, through innovation, creativity and change. They take responsibility for complex systems with significant levels of risk.

The MEng degree is recognised throughout the UK and fully satisfies the Engineering Council’s academic requirements for registration as a Chartered Engineer. The three-year BEng (Bachelor’s) degree shares the first 3 years as the MEng degree and consequently only partially satisfies the academic requirements for Chartered Engineer status. BEng graduates can then carry on to do, for example, a specialist Master’s degree, to meet the full academic requirements. This can often be achieved whilst in full time employment based upon schemes run within industry.

Aerospace Engineering with Pilot Studies BEng (Hons)

PROGRAMME LENGTH: 3 YEARS

The three-year BEng degree programmes cover all of the main aerospace engineering topics, equipping you with an understanding of, and preparation for, a career in the aerospace industry. The academic content for the Pilot Studies programme is very similar to the BEng (H425) but with alternative modules for pilot studies included. Students are also required to undertake a 20-hour flight training programme during Year 1. This is mandatory, with the cost for the flight training being in addition to the usual University fees.

The four-year MEng offers students a greater depth and breadth of specialist knowledge in the core aerospace engineering subjects. It provides you with the opportunity to develop and demonstrate further key skills required by employers such as initiative, innovation and advanced problem-solving through the Capstone Design Project. The academic content for the Pilot Studies programme is very similar to the MEng (H421) but with alternative modules for pilot studies included. Students are also required to undertake a 20-hour flight training programme during Year 1. This is mandatory, with the cost for the flight training being in addition to the usual University fees.

The four-year BEng degree programme covers all of the main aerospace engineering topics, equipping you with an understanding of, and preparation for, a career in the aerospace industry. Year three of this programme will be spent on a year-long placement with an approved company/organisation. The year in industry is dependent upon placements being available and on is subject to your performance in previous years. During this time, you will develop work-based transferrable skills and professional competences leading to enhanced employability. You will then be well placed to take up opportunities in project-based, research and management roles, both within the Aerospace sector as well as other engineering industries and beyond. You may also choose to go onto to further Postgraduate study. The academic content for the Pilot Studies programme is very similar to the BEng (H426) but with alternative modules for pilot studies included. Students are also required to undertake a 20-hour flight training programme during Year 1. This is mandatory, with the cost for the flight training being in addition to the usual University fees.
