Creativity in Design: An Interactive 2-day CPD Workshop with Martin JT Ould

On the 2nd and 3rd May 2019, Martin Ould of the University of Bristol delivered an interactive workshop on creativity in design. The workshop was attended by a group of Industrial Design undergraduate students, PhD students, and staff members.
The workshop focused on the concept of VIEW: An Assessment of Problem Solving StyleSM. Attendees complete a corresponding psychometric test prior to the workshop. Their test results revealed exciting insights about each participants preferences in three areas of (a) orientation to change (the Explorer or Developer style), (b) manner of processing (the External or Internal style), and (c) ways of deciding (the Person or Task style) and formed a basis for all to reflect on.
By using the results obtained, Martin was able to demonstrate through various problem solving activities how VIEWSM provides deep insights into fundamental human dynamics of creative change and learning. As Martin tailored the workshop around the group’s results, each person was able to understand their own problem solving style as well as gain an appreciation for how they must learn to be comfortable working with those who think differently.
The group of participants felt they had learned something new and very insightful about themselves and thoroughly enjoyed the workshop. Martin was extremely engaging and could not be praised enough by the participants, with many now eager and excited to observe and reflect on their own behavior when finding themselves in problem solving situations.
At the end of the second day, Martin awarded attendees an official certificate logging 6 hours’ worth of Continuous Professional Development. Following this, the Industrial Design Society Vice President Samantha Hilton presented Martin a Certificate of Appreciation on behalf of the Division of Industrial Design.
