Professional Student Membership registration with the IED

On 13 March 2018, twenty Industrial Design students were officially admitted to the Student Members register of the Institution of Engineering Designers. The IED is a British professional engineering institution founded in 1945. It is the UK’s only professional body representing those working in the fields of Engineering and Technological Product Design. The membership of the institution work in a diverse range of industries that include: product design and manufacturing; architectural design and construction; mechanical, automotive and aircraft design, design education, IT and computing. The IED is licensed to award three Charterships, including Chartered Technological Product Designer. This is an exciting first step towards embarking on professional career in the field of design and earning full membership and registration as Incorporated Engineer, Chartered Engineer, Registered Product Designer, or Chartered Technological Product Designer in years to come. The students were awarded an official certificate and presented with an IED lapel pin.
Previously, on 8 February 2018, industrial guest speaker Dr Paul Morley delivered an inspirational talk to the Industrial Design student body on the topic of “What is Professional Registration for Engineers, and Why should you bother?” – Not only did the ID students learn about the beauty of design and the fun one can – and should – have being an engineer, they also were informed about the benefits of being actively involved with a professional body in their field. This talk was organised under the UoL Employability Scheme. Industrial Design Society Vice President Charlotte Mears award a Certificate of Appreciation to the speaker.
