Ethnomethodology and Conversation Analysis - SOCI519

Instructor: Dr Michael Mair

This module focuses on ethnomethodological and conversation analytic approaches to the study of language, interaction and social practices. The module will look at how ethnographic research, observation and interviewing can be 'repurposed', that is, put to work in alternate ways when pursued ethnomethodologically.

In practical terms, the module will cover: key works and ideas in both fields; how to identify analytically interesting audio and video data; how to work up audio and video data in and through the transcription process; and how to 'build' analyses of data individually and in collaboration with others.
