PhD student David Bareham awarded a prize for his research

The School of Electrical Engineering and Electronics is delighted to announce that PhD student David Bareham has been awarded a prize for his research at a conference in December 2023.

David presented a paper at the Doctoral Consortium for the 36th International Conference on Legal Knowledge and Information Systems (JURIX 2023), which was held in Maastricht, The Netherlands.

The prize awarded was the Best Doctoral Consortium Paper for his contribution titled “Predicting decisions of the European Patent Office’s Boards of Appeal using machine learning”. The JURIX Doctoral Consortium chair, Professor Monica Palmirani, announced the award and presented the prize at the conference dinner.

David is part of the CDT on Data Analytics and Society and his project partner and co-sponsor is law firm Taylor Wessing. David’s PhD project is on the topic of explainable AI for law and his UoL supervisors are Katie Atkinson from the School of Electrical Engineering, Electronics and Computer Science, and Jeremy Marshall from the School of Law and Social Justice.
