Research fellowships
The School of Electrical Engineering, Electronics and Computer Science hosts numerous staff members awarded prestigious personal fellowships and is strongly committed to attracting and retaining more fellows in the future.
Fellowships are available for those at all stages in their research careers and can be particularly effective in establishing the careers of early-stage researchers.
In the School of Electrical Engineering, Electronics and Computer Science, we will actively support interested applicants in submitting bids to the relevant organisations and will then work with them to maximise their research and wider career potential during the course of the award.
Sources of fellowships obtained by current members of staff include EPSRC, ERC, the Royal Society, the Royal Academy of Engineering and the Leverhulme Trust. These recipients and other members of staff who have sat on various fellowship selection panels are happy to provide expert advice on the application process to prospective candidates.
If you are interested in applying for a fellowship to be based at Liverpool now or in the future, or if you are interested in moving an existing fellowship to Liverpool, then we would like to hear from you.
Contacts
The deadlines for many fellowship schemes are just once per year and the applications can take a long time to prepare - so get in touch at the earliest opportunity. If you know an existing staff member who you would like to work with, then you can contact them directly. If not, or if you have any general enquiries, then please contact Xiaowei Huang and Cherie Judge.
Career development and prospects
In addition to housing excellent research facilities, the School of Electrical Engineering, Electronics and Computer Science prides itself on engendering a stimulating research environment in which the independent fellow can thrive.
Fellows are essentially given the same opportunities for career development as full members of academic staff.
- They are assigned senior mentors
- They are actively encouraged to compete for additional internal and external research funds and are supported in this
- They are given the opportunity to supervise postgraduate and undergraduate students in undertaking research projects
- They are encouraged to attend relevant short courses to increase the quality, reach and impact of their research.
Furthermore, designated travel funds are available to the fellow to enable them to interface with the wider community.
The School of Electrical Engineering, Electronics and Computer Science takes the career development of its fellows very seriously and has an excellent record of providing permanent academic jobs to its research fellows. The fellow is subject to the same annual Professional Development Review (PDR) (staff only link) process as regular academics. This includes an annual one-to-one meeting with an experienced academic providing the opportunity to discuss career progression directly. Research fellows are not required to teach and engage in other duties of full academic staff unless they wish to for career development purposes.
