Best practices within the School
We are proud of the practices that have been shown to help us achieve our objectives.
What have we done?

- Launched the Female and Non-Binary Student Network in 2022/23, aimed at fostering connections and networking opportunities for undergraduate and postgraduate taught students. The network is also open to female and non-binary research students, postdoctoral research and staff within the School, with two events held annually.
- Hosted the 17th BCSWomen Lovelace Colloquium in 2023, an annual one-day conference for women and non-binary students in computing and related subjects. We continue to support undergraduate and postgraduate taught students to participate in the colloquium every year. Find further details on BCSWomen Lovelace Colloquium.
- Established the Athena Swan Award in 2015/16 to recognise undergraduate students who have actively promoted the participation of women in engineering. View the previous Athena Swan Award winners.

- Encourage scheduling of School meetings during core working hours (10:00 to 16:00) to support staff and students with childcare and carer responsibilities.
- Achieved high completion rates for equality and diversity, and unconscious bias trainings. Other essential trainings such as Active Bystander and Micro-Inequalities are regularly offered to students and staff.
- Organise regular EDI-related talks and/or panel discussions, such as events to commemorate International Women’s Day and International Men’s Day.

- Adopted Faculty-level guidelines for academic appointments, ensuring mitigation of unconscious bias during selection and interview processes.
- Implemented Faculty-level guidelines to support staff returning to work after maternity, paternity or parental leave to ensure a smooth transition back to work.
