"The ethos of Equality, Diversity and Inclusion is a fundamental cornerstone of policy within the School of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering and Electronics and one that myself and my colleagues within the Student Experience Team continue to promote. In my role as Student Administrator I have encouraged the widening diversity of participation within the student cohort for the Staff Student Liaison Committee (SSLC), which is already vitally important to ensure student voices are heard and incorporated into departmental policy making, and even more so when those student voices represent a wide range of gender, sexual orientation, religion, race, disability and nationality.
We have also ensured that an item on Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) is always included in every SSLC agenda; we hope this will provide students with the freedom and opportunity to raise important issues pertaining to EDI. A representative from the EDI Committee will also attend these sessions to discuss any topics that have been raised and also to promote activities, training and guest speakers that play an important role in encouraging staff and students to engage further with EDI policy and values.
We understand that the objectives our EDI Committee and School strive for are not complete and there is still significant progress to be made, but as long as we honest and accepting of the challenges that need to be overcome, then we will be on the right path."
