Academic Toolkit for Paediatricians

The EATC4Children has worked closely with the Academic Paediatric Association of Great Britain and Ireland (APA) and the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (RCPCH) to develop an online toolkit to help paediatric trainees interested in an academic career pathway.

The toolkit is structured using a Gantt chart, where each milestone links to further advice and resources to help trainees on their research journey. Topics include (but are not limited to) pre-PhD preparation, initial planning, finding a supervisor, developing your research question, finding collaborators, investigating funders, thinking about feasibility, the funding application, costings, final application checks, university sign off, and funded period years one, two and three.

There are also sections in the toolkit on personal development and case studies of paediatric trainees at different stages of their academic career.

The next steps in Toolkit development are to focus on the post-PhD period and maintaining a clinical academic trajectory.

RCPCH/NIHR Academic Trainee Days

As part of their work to support paediatric trainees, the RCPCH has a Trainee Research Network with connections to other resources and regional networks across the UK. Additionally, the RCPCH host regular Academic Trainee Days, open to all trainees. The members of the EATC4Children are committed to supporting these sessions.
