University of Liverpool Shared Research Faciities (LIV-SRF)
The University of Liverpool’s Shared Research Facilities (LIV-SRF) are open to researchers across the University, together with external partners from academia, the NHS or industry. LIV-SRF works across 17 facilities, with around 90 dedicated staff and £40m-worth of equipment. They offer world-class life sciences resources cover bioimaging, bioresources and multi-omics.

Alder Hey Clinical Research Facility (CRF)
This £2.6million NIHR-funded facility, opened in September 2012, seeks to improve the health and well-being of children by providing an internationally excellent facility for conducting experimental medicine and early phase studies. The facility is staffed by an expert team, which enables the safe delivery of high intensity, complex research studies of new medications and interventions, including those requiring inpatient, overnight care. It is an important “one-stop” resource for the commercial sector, including pharmaceutical companies, for the conduct of experimental medicine and early phase studies of novel agents under the EU Regulation on Better Medicines for Children.

Deptartment of Clinical Pharmacy, Alder Hey
The Department of Pharmacy supports a large portfolio of commercial & non-commercial CTIMPs and is an integral part of supporting the portfolios of the NIHR Children’s Speciality and the Children and Children’s Cancer & Leukaemia Group. The NIHR Alder Hey Clinical Research Facility has a dedicated dispensary and senior pharmacist expertise, including within the aseptic suite. The inpatient pharmacy unit includes provision for a gene therapy suite. The Paediatric Medicines Research Unit has a dedicated research team leading on programmes of research into drug safety science and age appropriate formulations.

Clinical Laboratory Medicine at Alder Hey
Alder Hey laboratories are staffed by a specialist team of scientific, technical and support staff, supported by membership of professional bodies (e.g. Institute of Biomedical Science; Royal College of Pathologists; Association for Clinical Biochemistry). The laboratory is equipped with ‘state-of-the-art’ instrumentation supporting both sample throughput and developmental research, including high specification separation technology, such as tandem mass spectrometry. This ensures extensive in-house assay capability and capacity, commensurate with the requirements of the EATC. The laboratories accommodate staff dedicated to processing research samples and interpretation of results.

NIHR GOSH BRC and Paediatric Excellence Initiate
The NIHR GOSH Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) has firmly established itself as the leading paediatric research centre in Europe, with GOSH being the only specialist BRC for children. The GOSH BRC vision and strategy is to drive state-of-the-art methodology platforms spanning from gene cell therapy production through genomics and bio-engineering to advanced health informatics, combining these with high-level experimental trial expertise to accelerate breakthrough discovery medicine for children with rare and complex diseases. Alder Hey and University of Liverpool are involved with the Paediatric Excellence Initiative of the BRC which aims to work within the specific themes to foster technology exchange, education and speedy translation of tests and therapies, while maximising access for patients.
Drug Safety Science
The Centre for Drug Science Safety undertakes clinical and basic research into the causes, characteristics, and consequences of adverse drug reactions (ADRs) to understand the fundamental mechanisms behind them. This facilitates safer drug design and provides pharmacological rationale for the safer use of medicines in patients.

Clinical Trials Research Centre at the University of Liverpool
The CTRC supports phase I-IV multi centre randomised controlled trials, systematic reviews, core outcome sets, service evaluation, and other research and has a specialised paediatrics unit.
North West Hub for Trials Methodology Research (NWHTMR)
NWHTMR is a collaboration between the Universities of Liverpool, Lancaster, Bangor, and Manchester. One of the Hub’s three main research themes is early phase trial design. Continued development focuses on novel model-based designs for early phase trials of medicines for children, and the extent to which extrapolation of efficacy and safety data from adults to children can be undertaken.
