For International Women’s Day 2022 on Tuesday 8th March, we are holding two public screenings of the documentary ‘Picture A Scientist’ and hosting a virtual panel discussion with leading women researchers from the Faculty of Sciences and Engineering, University of Liverpool.

Featured Scientists:
Marielle Chartier is a Professor of Nuclear Physics at the School of Physical Sciences, University of Liverpool. Marielle is deputy chair, as well as chair elect (from July this year for 3 years), of the Alice Collaboration Board - an international collaboration of about 2000 members from 170 institutes in 40 countries. Marielle’s research interests are focused on the exploration of the phase diagram of nuclear matter using the ALICE experiment at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN.
Elisabetta Mariani is Reader in Earth Materials at the School of Environmental Sciences and Director of the Scanning Electron Microscopy shared research facility (SEM-SRF) at the University of Liverpool. Betty’s research focuses on constraining deformation and recrystallization/nucleation processes in Earth’s materials to gain insight into the rheology of Earth’s crust and mantle.
Esther Tuñón is a Lecturer in the Materials Innovation Factory and the School of Engineering and a UKRI Future Leaders Fellow at the University of Liverpool. Esther’s research aims to develop novel processing techniques to bridge the gap between materials discovery and manufacturing; to design and understand the behaviour of complex yield stress fluids for 3D printing applications; and to create hierarchical structures for health and energy applications.
Janine Kavanagh (panel host) is a Reader in Volcanology and UKRI Future Leaders Fellow at the School of Environmental Sciences, University of Liverpool. Janine founded the MAGMA Lab in 2014 and leads a multidisciplinary team of researchers tacking key questions in the study of volcanic plumbing systems.

PICTURE A SCIENTIST is a feature-length documentary film chronicling the groundswell of researchers who are writing a new chapter for women scientists. A biologist, a chemist and a geologist lead viewers on a journey deep into their own experiences in the sciences, overcoming brutal harassment, institutional discrimination, and years of subtle slights to revolutionize the culture of science. From cramped laboratories to spectacular field sites, we also encounter scientific luminaries who provide new perspectives on how to make science itself more diverse, equitable, and open to all.
