Considering PhD study? Looking for reasons to convince yourself its the right choice? See what seven of our students say...

Background

This CDT arose from a proposal from the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) for a Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT) in Distributed Algorithms.  The two main themes are 'Towards a Data Driven Future' and 'Future Computing Systems.' Unlike most other CDT’s our PhD projects are co-defined, co-supervised and co-funded with partners from government and industry.  You can see the full list of our partners here

7 reasons to join our CDT?

1. I wanted to become an expert in data science and contribute towards government policy.

The CDT’s vision is that our graduates will become future leaders in Distributed Algorithms meeting the needs of government, academia and industry.

2. The precise theme of my PhD interested me and I believe distributed algorithms will remain an important challenge for decades to come.

Read the CDT Director’s interview about the trajectory of the CDT’s graduate data scientists and the potential to become the next Andrew Gelman or Andrew Ng.

3. After doing some research and reading a paper, I found that this topic is very desirable by many industries that I would like to work in the future.

What is Distributed Algorithms? It’s the fusion of big data and high-performance computing – getting computers to work together using vast amounts of data to produce algorithms that provide solutions to various problems.

4. I found it very appealing the fact that every project was linked to an industrial partner and that I get to collaborate with many different people and industries.

The CDT is aligned with 20+ unique partners, who work with the CDT and provide them with real-world problems to tackle through the medium of bespoke and unique PhD projects. See who our partners are here.

5. The project was well aligned with my research interests and partnered with an amazing company.

If you have a background in a numerate subject and have a passion and ambition to make a difference, our CDT will provide you with ample opportunity to set you on a trajectory to become a future leader in data science and distributed algorithms.

6. This PhD project gives an excellent opportunity to expand the theory and at the same time, apply it to a specific problem.

Each PhD student is aligned to a specific sub-group working through problems via research, discussion and coming up with solutions. All problems are unique to the partners we work with – from industry, government and academia.

7. Ever-growing field, experience in distributed algorithms will ensure that plenty of doors will open.

The need for people who understand distributed algorithms is becoming more and more apparent – as high-performance computing advances and as the world is acquiring more and more data, distributed algorithms will provide for solutions for every day issues, which will be solved quicker and faster.
