Cohort 3 Induction

The Distributed Algorithms CDT aims to recruit 60 PhD students over five cohorts. In October 2021 we welcomed Cohort 3.

Welcome Cohort 3

Our CDT welcomed 13 new students in October to add to the two previous cohorts already here working here on PhD projects.

Welcome to Alex, Andy, Ben, Chris, George, Jack, Jianyang, Jinhao, Josh, Kieron, Oliver, Will and William.  Their student bios are published on our website here, and you can read their project summaries here.

We’re super excited by the arrival of the new students and its fantastic to see them settling in so well, already, with some presenting at our weekly team building meetings.

DA CDT’s Mission

Our CDT has a mission to engage and recruit 60 PhD students over five cohorts.  Our main emphasis is to create the future leaders of tomorrow in data science and artificial intelligence, and contributing to real-world problems that our partners need help solving. Find out more here.

Most of our students have backgrounds in engineering, computer science and physics alongside those who have graduated in astrophysics and maths.

Cohort 3’s projects will be focused on Machine Learning, Distributed Information Processing, Non-Myopic Approaches to Sensing and Surveying and Artificial Intelligence to name but a few areas.

Our new partners for this cohort include Collins Aerospace, Cubica, Unilever, NGS Pilkington and Remark AI.  We’re all delighted that our portfolio of projects and partners continues to grow.

Overview of Cohort 3's Induction Day

Cohort 3’s induction day consisted of a welcome presentation by CDT Director, Professor Simon Maskell, following by talks from our Cohort 1 and 2 students, who really seemed to inspire our new recruits!

Lunch followed, giving the students a chance to get to know their fellow cohorts as well as key staff from the DA CDT and Signal Processing Group.  The day culminated with a student-led campus tour.

The half-day induction was incredibly friendly and well-organised. I think having a good turnout from the earlier cohorts helped me gauge a sense of the positive atmosphere.
