This presentation draws on key findings from three projects conducted at the University of Liverpool. First it presents a new instrument to measure digital inclusion at household level, reporting key findings about gaps in digital access and digital literacy among UK families with children. Then, it focuses on two specific populations that may be considered vulnerable for different reasons. On the one hand, it shows how important both digital access and digital literacy are for the social inclusion and reintegration of survivors of modern slavery in the UK. On the other hand, it focuses on the news literacy skills that primary school children need to critically engage with news in a digital society, and on the relationship between their skills and civic engagement. The implications of these findings for research and practice are discussed.
