School of Dentistry staff and students at IADR

Students and staff from the School of Dentistry flew to New Orleans recently to attend the 2024 International Association for Dental, Oral, and Craniofacial Research (IADR) general session and exhibition.

Our team were able to view some of the most advanced presentations of dental research in the world, with many of them also due to present their own work to the international audience. Two of our undergraduate students, Junayed and Amir presented their research, as well as PhD students Emma and Anders. We also had 10 poster presentations on display in the session, featuring the brilliant work of our staff and students.

We welcomed visitors to our own stall at the exhibition, showcasing the University of Liverpool and the School of Dentistry’s cutting-edge research. During the session, we set up one of our haptic simulators to provide hands-on demonstrations of its fantastic potential as an educational tool.

Speaking on their experience of the conference, one of our students said; “It was a great opportunity to meet fellow researchers from across the world. It allows us to discuss similarities and differences in research and clinical dentistry across the world and identify areas for new work and collaboration.”

We also saw some fantastic induvial success, including Katarzyna Gurzawska-Comis presented with the Joseph Lister award for her research efforts. Her project titled “Green Bone” is concerned with the repair and treatment of large bone defects in patients with compromised bone metabolism due to ageing and medical conditions such as osteoporosis often present a clinical challenge. Therefore, the aim of "Green Bone" is to develop adjunctive methods to enhance bone healing via advanced sustainable 3D-printed biomaterials. The finding of this project may have a crucial impact on bone repair process especially in elderly and osteoporotic patients.

Finally, Laura Gartshore became President Elect of the IADR’s Educational Research Group. Massive congratulations to them both!

Next year’s IADR General Session and Exhibition will be hosted in Barcelona where we hope to continue our success, both in promoting the good work of our School and showcasing the fantastic research talent we have to offer. We will aim to “continue to provide and support high quality research ideas that will raise the profile of dentistry.”
