Advancing Ophthalmic Nursing Practice

Code: HEAL493

Credits: 40

Semester: Whole Session

The module, HEAL493, “Advancing Ophthalmic Nursing Practice”, is the second of two modules on ophthalmic nursing course which is part of a Postgraduate Certificate in Ophthalmic Nursing Practice. This module builds on HEAL492, “Foundations to Ophthalmic Nursing Practice”, as in a spiral curriculum and, as such, will revisit some elements in much more detail.

It will cover ocular pathology, including aetiology and associated signs, management of ophthalmic disorders and management thereof. It will encourage a patient-centred approach and consider the impact of ophthalmic disorders on patients and the importance of interdisciplinary and multi-professional teams. In addition, the module will ensure competence in a range of clinical skills and nursing procedures.

The module will be delivered wholly online across the whole session (two semesters) to enable the ophthalmic nurses time to assimilate and synthesise module content and apply their knowledge to the clinical environment. It will also enable them to develop their portfolio of competencies to a required standard.
There will be scheduled online and asynchronous e-lectures delivered by a range of clinical experts and researchers across the themes identified in the syllabus.

There will be opportunities for online discussions related to case studies which will facilitate the integration of theoretical content with some of the more practical and patient-focused aspects of this module. Throughout the discussions, the learners will be encouraged to reflect on their learning and experiences to maximise their learning, thereby enabling active and authentic learning.
Further activities will include: the psychosocial aspects of ophthalmic disorders; patient presentations and differential diagnosis; journal articles for appraisal; accessing appropriate external online resources; and formative assessments which will be interspersed throughout the modules so the learners can monitor their ongoing learning. Effective engagement with supported self-directed study will further develop lifelong learning skills relevant to the learners’ professional development.

Learners will be required to complete a range of assessments including an online exam, clinical case studies. Learners will also be supported by their mentors in completing clinical competency sign-off.
