The module, HEAL492, “Foundations of Ophthalmic Nursing Practice” is the first of two modules in the PG Cert for Ophthalmic Nursing programme. This module provides ophthalmic nurses with an in-depth critical knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of the ocular system with an introduction to ocular pathology and pharmacology. In addition, the module will ensure competence in a range of clinical skills and nursing procedures.
The module content will be delivered online. There will be asynchronous e-lectures delivered by a range of clinical experts and researchers across the themes identified in the syllabus. Scheduled synchronous online discussions and tutorials including case scenarios will facilitate the integration of the theoretical content with the practical and patient-focused aspect of the module. There will be opportunity for active engagement and reflection and sharing of authentic clinical experiences through online Q&A sessions and online discussion boards.
The module will encourage an evidence-based approach to learning and practice to prepare students for the module assessments. Effective engagement with supported self-directed study will further develop lifelong learning skills relevant to the learners’ professional development.
Learners will be required to complete a range of assessments including an online exam and critical reflective summary. Learners will also be supported by their mentors in completing clinical competency sign off.
