This is a 15 credit third year module that allows students to develop knowledge, skills, and techniques for investigating and controlling human and animal disease outbreaks. As part of the module, students will take part in a simulated disease outbreak scenario, where they will be responsible for determining the source and what approaches to take to control the outbreak. The module will build on the knowledge and skills they have developed over the course of their studies and allow them to apply this to control of disease outbreaks. The importance of developing knowledge and skills in this area is evidenced by the Covid-19 pandemic. The module comprises lectures, seminars, and workshops led by academics with expertise in the investigation of, and control of outbreaks.
The module will be assessed by a group poster presentation on a disease outbreak, a 5 minute individual pitch where students’ reflect on their role in the disease outbreak scenario and a piece of written science communication known as a POSTnote
