Advanced Smart Materials

Code: MATS525

Credits: 15

Semester: Semester 2

This module introduces students to the captivating world of Smart Materials, a dynamic discipline at the intersection of Material Science and Engineering Innovation. Smart materials are remarkable substances with the ability to significantly respond to external stimuli, such as temperature, pressure, electricity, light and magnetic fields.

Examples of these cutting-edge materials include piezoelectrics, electrostrictive materials, shape memory alloys, ferrofluids, MEMS and various biomimetic materials, among others.

By the end of the module, students will develop a comprehensive understanding of a range of Smart Materials, equipping them with the skills to select, design, and leverage these fascinating materials in innovative engineering applications.
