HOW WE STUDY THE PAST

Code: HIST507

Credits: 30

Semester: Semester 1

Why is there more than one version of the past? This module answers this question by exploring how various positionalities, theories, and methods influence historians and the appearance and interpretation of the past. Understanding that history-writing is a product of the context in which it is produced, the module begins by introducing students to how different standpoints, methodologies, and theories shape academic history. After this intellectual grounding, the module offers students the opportunity to test these ideas through four expert-led workshops. These workshops will have students engage with a particular approach to the past – such as emotional history, or quantitative analysis – to give them a holistic understanding of the evolving nature of academic history.
