The module examines Stone Age Archaeology from the emergence of the genus Homo in the Early Pleistocene approx. 2.6 million years ago to the evolution and complex behaviours of Homo erectus beginning around 1.8 million years ago. In geographic scope, the module deals chiefly with developments in Africa, the Middle East and Europe. The module selects key themes in human evolution, such as the first use of fire, and changes in life history, and technological evolution. The principal module aims are to examine the origins of the genus Homo and the prime time of Homo erectus to understand the deep roots of human evolution in the Early Stone Age.
