This module examines the criminal justice system as a gendered institution, drawing on a range of feminist and queer criminological standpoints to highlight issues that have traditionally been invisibilised in mainstream criminology. Throughout the module, the concept of ‘intersectionality’ is used as a lens through which students are to understand and contextualise experiences with the criminal justice system – emphasising that while the module is titled ‘gender and crime’, it is rarely sufficient to look at gender alone when we are trying to understand women’s, men’s and gender diverse people’s experiences with the criminal justice system. The teaching approach links theory, research and practice to offer students a holistic perspective on this key policy issue.
