Overview

This course offers an introduction to the main areas of Welfare Benefits, and is aimed at volunteers or trainees in the Welfare Rights advice sector who wish to progress to case work, and those in the voluntary sector generally who would like a more detailed knowledge of Welfare Rights.

Syllabus

Session 1: An overview of the benefits system: Means-tested, contribution-based and non-means-tested benefits and how they relate

Session 2: The contribution-based benefits

Session 3: Non means-tested benefits: Personal Independence Payment

Session 4: Non-means-tested benefits: Child Disability Living Allowance, Attendance Allowance

Session 5: If you are ill: The Work Capability Assessment and how it affects your benefit

Session 6: Means-tested benefits: The legacy benefits

Session 7: Means-tested benefits: Universal Credit

Session 8: The roof over your head - help with Housing Costs

Session 9: Benefits and migrants: A brief introduction to the rights of non-UK citizens

Session 10:  Other benefits issues and further information
