Start Date
13 January, 2025
There will be 10 weekly meetings on Monday, 1.30 - 3.30pm, starting from 13 January.
Overview
Isaiah stands at the head of the collection of prophetic books in the Hebrew Bible and has always been a significant text. A complete copy was found among the Dead Sea Scrolls in 1947. With its many "messianic" allusions it was always a special text for New Testament writers and early Christian commentators. But it is a complex work, which almost certainly derives from different time periods and therefore different settings in the life of the people of Israel. This course is the first of three on this big book and will focus on the first 23 chapters of the 66 in total.
The aim of the course is to provide participants with the academic, theological and literary tools to engage seriously with the text of Isaiah. Each week will cover 2 or 3 chapters in English but with occasional references to the Hebrew text to explain issues of translation or interpretation.
The class is open to anyone and no previous knowledge is required. People of all faith traditions and none are welcome but should be prepared to engage with the lively discussions that ensue as we work through the text verse by verse and chapter by chapter.
