Start Date
30 September, 2024
There will be 10 weekly meetings on Monday, 1.30 - 3.30pm, starting from 30 September.
Overview
Most of the shorter letters of Paul were written from a place of confinement. This is usually taken to be his final imprisonment in Rome, but might have been earlier. The letters to be studied are Colossians, Ephesians, Philemon and the letters to Timothy and Titus. If genuine they represent the final developed thinking of the Apostle Paul, though since the 19th century the authenticity of all of them have been questioned by more radical scholars. This course enables participants to immerse themselves in the text and to draw their own conclusions.
The course aims to provide a space to read critically in an English translation these six prison letters of Paul. It seeks to develop critical skills and literary and theological competence in assessing New Testament texts. Limited reference will be made to the original Greek text in order to explain major issues of interpretation.
No prior knowledge is required but a willingness to engage critically with the texts is expected. There is close reading of the epistles with roughly 2-3 chapters covered in each of the 10 sessions.
