The Evolution of Istanbul: From Byzantium to Constantinople

Overview

In this first of two linked Saturday courses, we shall trace the story of the city now known as Istanbul, from its beginnings as the Greek city of Byzantium to its becoming Constantinople, capital of the Byzantine Empire. The day's sessions will take you through some of the earliest accounts of Byzantium and will focus on its remarkable architecture and its evolution into Constantinople.

11am-12pm:     Session 1:          The city at the crossroads of the world - some impressions of visitors over the centuries

12pm-1pm:       Session 2:          From earliest times to Constantine

1pm-2pm:         Break

2pm-3pm:         Session 3:          Byzantine circuses, columns and cisterns

3pm-4pm:         Session 4:          Byzantine churches

No prior experience required.

Please note that the ‘last date available to book’ date is only a guide. We reserve the right to close bookings earlier if courses are over- or under-subscribed. In order to avoid disappointment, please be sure enrol as soon as possible. Registrations will not be processed until the following day if received after 3pm. 

Course Lecturer: Dr Paul Lawrence

I have taught CE courses at the University of Liverpool on and off for 20 years. My particular interest is how archaeology and history helps us to better understand ancient texts. I have a first hand knowledge of Turkey having lived there for a number of years and visited regularly since.
