Overview

Fascinated by Ancient Egypt? This 5 week course, delivered by Dr Jo Backhouse, will provide an overview of Pharaonic culture.

Across 5 weeks, Dr Backhouse will introduce you to key concepts and topics in Egyptology. You will learn about the rediscovery of ancient Egypt, the decipherment of hieroglyphs, mummification, and the link between magic and healing. A variety of exciting evidence will be studied, including archaeological, material culture (objects), and texts in translation.

By the end of the course, you will have a good grasp on the subject, and be ready for further study. No prior knowledge is required, just an inquiring mind!

Week 1: Egypt in Antiquity: Rediscovering the Past
Formation of a Discipline

Week 2: The Rosetta Stone and the decipherment of hieroglyphics
The role of the scribe in Ancient Egypt

Week 3: Key concepts in the study of Ancient Egypt: The Body and the Person
How the Egyptians viewed themselves in relation to this world and the next

Week 4: Key concepts in the study of Ancient Egypt: Mummification
Why the preservation of the body was so important to Ancient Egyptians

Week 5: Magic and Medicine
The link between religion and healing

Course Lecturer: Dr Joanne Backhouse

Joanne completed her PhD at the University of Liverpool in 2016.  Her research focuses on the representation of women in ancient Egypt. However, she has a wider interest in the art of ancient Egypt and the evolution of style.  She has lectured on the material culture of ancient Egypt for over ten years, in a variety of institutions and more recently online.  She is also Chair of Wirral Ancient Egypt Society.
