Blood and Sand: The Real Lives and Deaths of Roman Gladiators

Tuesday, 2-4pm

Start Date

29 April, 2025

There will be 3 weekly meetings on Tuesday, 2-4pm, starting from 29 April.

Overview

This course uses historical and archaeological evidence to reconstruct the real lives and deaths of gladiators across the Roman world. We will explore how gladiators fought and where, their lives outside the arena, their place in society, and how they were depicted in art, both in Rome and the wider provinces. The course aims to introduce students to the main evidence about gladiators, and to address some of the main misconceptions about gladiatorial games in the modern world. No prior knowledge is needed for this course (but if you have seen 'Spartacus' and 'Gladiator' it will be an advantage!)

Syllabus

Session 1: The Life of the Roman Gladiator

Session 2: Death and the Roman Gladiator

Session 3: Perceptions of Roman Gladiators, Ancient and Modern
