Ancient Peru and the Spanish Conquest

Monday, 10am - 12pm

Start Date

13 January, 2025

There will be 10 weekly meetings on Monday, 10am - 12pm, starting from 13 January.

Overview

Many Ancient cultures flourished in Peru including the Nazca who were famous for their lines and glyphs near the coast. The last of the native cultures was that of the Incas who created an empire that dominated the Pacific Coast and the Andes. Then in the 1530s the Spanish under the ferocious Pizarro brothers arrived and within a few years the Inca Empire was no more. Spectacular ruins such as those at Machu Picchu are a testament to their sophistication.

The course aims to give an introduction to Peru before the conquest and to follow in detail the story of the Spanish take-over.

It is open to all with a general interest in the topic and no previous knowledge is assumed.

Course material will be provided via Canvas to support this online series.
