Women and Popular Music

Thursday, 1 - 3pm

Start Date

1 May, 2025

There will be 6 weekly meetings on Thursday, 1 - 3pm, starting from 1 May

Overview

This course looks at the important role women have played in popular music both as producers and consumers. The barriers and challenges women have faced in the industry will be discussed and we will explore why women have often struggled to gain acceptance as serious musicians. The course will reveal how marketing typically forces female artists to conform to feminine stereotypes and double standards regarding behaviour. The role of women as fans will also be considered to see whether music fandom is gendered. Images, music, fashion and media will be examined to decide how women are objectified and more likely than male artists to be judged on their appearance. There will be case studies drawn from rock, rap, folk, pop and country music to promote discussion about the importance of gender in determining the reception of music by critics, fellow musicians and fans.
