Introduction to XJTU: Xi’an Jiaotong University (XJTU), established in 1896, stands as a national key University under the direct administration of the Ministry of Education of China. It holds a prestigious position as one of the top 10 Research Universities in China and proudly sits as a member of China’s esteemed C9 League. Notably, it secured the 290th spot on the QS World University Rankings list in 2022.
Aim of the Program: The program is designed to foster academic and people-to-people exchanges between the UK and China, facilitating friendly interactions while promoting cultural understanding and language immersion. Moreover, it provides University of Liverpool (UoL) students with an enriching travel opportunity.
Who Can Apply: Students from the University of Liverpool and Carmel College are encouraged to apply for the XJTU Summer School. Applicants should demonstrate an interest in China and Chinese culture, preferably with prior exposure to Chinese language studies. Priority is given to students holding HSK2 certificates.
What's Included: The XJTU summer school offers a comprehensive curriculum on Chinese culture, delivered in both English and Mandarin. Participants will engage in various activities, including:
- Attending lectures on Chinese culture
- Learning Tai Chi
- Participating in calligraphy classes
- Learning Chinese folk songs
- Engaging in arts-and-crafts sessions, including Chinese papercutting
- Exploring Chinese cuisine
- Delving into the Shaanxi Dialect, prevalent in Xi’an
The program features seminars and lectures by experts, scholars, and local students, with ample opportunities for sightseeing around cultural and historical sites in Beijing and Xi’an.
Dates: The program is scheduled to run from July 17th to July 27th, 2024.
Fees: Participants are responsible for their international flight expenses, with flights recommended from Manchester to Beijing. However, all other costs, including accommodation, domestic travel within China, meals, and tuition, are covered by XJTU. It is advised that participants bring sufficient spending money for personal expenses.
How to Apply: University of Liverpool students can visit the Liverpool Confucius Institute (LCI) in person at the CI Space/Administrators’ Office located on the ground floor of 126 Mount Pleasant for inquiries and registration. Alternatively, inquiries can be directed via email to lci@liverpool.ac.uk. Carmel College students can register in person with Yleana.
Number of Groups: The program will accommodate a maximum of 20 participants, with registrations accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.
