Lyndon C.S. Way (MA, PhD) is a lecturer in Communications and Media within the Discourse and Society research cluster here at the University of Liverpool. Previously, he has lectured at five universities in the UK, Canada, Cyprus and Turkey, including Liverpool Hope University, Izmir University of Economics, the European University of Lefke, the University of Windsor and Concordia University. He has also held a large number of positions as a newsroom, music and media practitioner.
His research specialty is in the area of discourse and society. He critically examines discourses articulated in popular music, online popular culture and news, using a variety of discourse analytical approaches alongside ethnography and musicology. He analyses web-based and traditional journalism in a variety of contexts, with much of this focusing on the political discourses articulated in Turkish news. He also critically examines relations between popular music, society and politics. The majority of this work focuses on protest music. He is the author of a number of scholarly articles and chapters. He is also author of the monograph 'Popular music, Politics and Power in Turkey since 2002' (Bloomsbury) and the Co-Editor of 'Music as Multimodal Discourse: Media, Power and Protest' (Bloomsbury). He collaborates with musicologists, historians, colleagues from international research groups and political activists. Alongside being a guest speaker at a number of universities and music festivals, he also regularly presents papers at international conferences which examine discourse, media, politics and/ or music. Presently he is working on a textbook (Sage) that will detail how to use Multimodal Critical Discourse Studies to analyse political protest in ‘Digital popular culture’, such as music videos, memes and parodies shared on social media.
