Continuous Seminar Assessment on Undergraduate Humanities Degrees: A Presentation and Discussion of a Teaching Model

Published on

19-23 Abercromby Square in summer

The School of the Arts warmly invites colleagues to a Teaching and Learning Seminar exploring continuous seminar assessment as an undergraduate teaching, learning and assessment method.

  • Wednesday 2nd April 4.00pm to 6.00pm
  • School of the Arts Library, 19-23 Abercromby Square

Led by Dr Tom Bunyard, the School of the Arts Assessment Coordinator and member of the Department of Philosophy, the seminar will set out an overview of a teaching model based around assessed small-group seminars. In this model, which has been successfully employed at the University of Brighton for many years, humanities students are assessed on their seminar participation in every module, from the start of their degree right through to its end.

The approach fosters oral skills, personal development, attendance and engagement, and a strong community between staff and students. Moreover, it accords with the Starmer government's new focus on oracy, and it may be of particular value within an educational context shaped by the advent of GAI. It remains rare, however, within the UK Higher Education landscape.

The presentation will be led by Tom, with contributions from Brighton colleagues past and present. They will discuss this teaching model, outline its benefits, and indicate its shortcomings and challenges.

Presenters:

Tom Bunyard, University of Liverpool (formerly University of Brighton)
Toby Lovat, University of Brighton
Deborah Madden, The Open University (formerly University of Brighton)
Vicky Margree, University of Brighton
