Vera Slavtcheva-Petkova presents paper at World Press Freedom Day
Having presented at last year's event in Indonesia, Dr Slavtcheva-Petkova will return to the World Press Freedom Day conference to present a paper entitled "Russia’s deadliest newspaper: Challenges, threats and protective mechanisms". Dr Slavtcheva-Petkova will also take part in the Policy Lab with a contribution on the issue of journalists' safety ("Assessing journalists’ safety in collaboration with policy-makers: the Worlds of Journalism study").
Established by the UN General Assembly in 1993, World Press Freedom Day is described by UNESCO as an opportunity to:
- Celebrate the fundamental principles of press freedom
- Assess the state of press freedom throughout the world
- Defend the media from attacks on their independence
- Pay tribute to journalists who have lost their lives in the line of duty.
This year’s global theme is Keeping Power in Check: Media, Justice and The Rule of Law, and will cover issues of media and the transparency of the political process, the independence and media literacy of the judicial system, and the accountability of state institutions towards the public.
This year's annual conference, jointly organised by UNESCO and the Government of the Republic of Ghana, will take place in Accra, Ghana on 2 – 3 May.
